Passport Application process in India

Embarking on international adventures—be it for education, work, or exploration—often begins with securing essential documents like a passport and a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). While the process might seem daunting at first glance, rest assured, it’s more manageable than it appears. This guide is here to walk you through each step with clarity and warmth, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your global endeavors.

Applying for an Indian Passport (2025)

1. Create (or reuse) your Passport Seva account

  1. Visit the official portal and click “Register Now.” You’ll need a working email ID and an Indian mobile number for OTPs.
  2. Activate the link sent to your email, then sign in.

2. Fill out the online form

  1. Choose “Fresh Passport” for a first-timer or “Re-issue” if you’re renewing, changing particulars, or replacing a lost booklet.
  2. The portal autosaves, so you can come back if you need to hunt for dates or documents.

3. Pay the fee & book your slot

Service Normal Fee Tatkaal Surcharge Pay Online With

After payment, pick an available date/time at any PSK/POPSK in your jurisdiction. Cancelled slots re-appear at the same “refresh” hour every day—handy if you need an earlier appointment.

4. Gather originals + self-attested photocopies

Typical core set (the portal’s Document Advisor gives tailor-made lists):

  • Proof of present address (Aadhaar, voter ID, utility bill, etc.)
  • Proof of date of birth (birth certificate, PAN, Class 10 certificate).
  • Any supporting docs for name change, adoption, etc.
Bring one set of photocopies and the originals for scanning.

5. PSK/POPSK visit

At Counter-A they verify documents and take your photo, fingerprints, and digital signature. All data are transferred to the new e-passport system, even if your booklet is the traditional type.

6. Police verification

Most “normal” cases require pre-issue police verification; Tatkaal applications get post-issue verification. Availability at your stated address speeds up the report. Special categories (government dependants, certain Northeast states, etc.) may have relaxed rules.

7. Dispatch & tracking

Once the police report is clear, the booklet prints in Nashik and Speed Post delivers to your door. Tatkaal dispatch is typically 1-3 working days from PSK visit.

What’s new in 2025?

  • Chip-Enabled e-Passports are live in 13 cities—Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi, and Delhi—with nationwide rollout slated for mid-2025.
  • The chip stores your photo, fingerprints, and demographic data, allowing quicker e-gate clearance overseas. Old passports remain valid until expiry.
